According to ‘very credible' intelligence sources, the British armed forces minister has warned of an “imminent attack” by Islamist terrorists on Kabul airport and has encouraged citizens to stay away from the airfield.
Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told the BBC on Thursday that there was “very, very credible” evidence that terrorists, particularly those from the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), were plotting a “highly lethal attack” on Kabul airport.
I can only say that the threat is severe. We will do our best to protect those who are there.
Heappey just said "yes" on Sky News when asked if an assault may happen in the next several hours. According to the BBC, intelligence about a planned IS suicide assault has gotten "much firmer."
This, according to the minister, is why the Foreign Office amended its travel advice on Wednesday night. People are being advised not to travel to Kabul airport by the British government, but rather to "move to a safe place and await further instructions," according to Heappey.
The minister said he understood individuals desperate to flee the Taliban regime's rule, but asked that the government disclose its intelligence on the threat to people's safety at Hamid Karzai International Airport. Outside the airport, he added, Western nations were depending on the Taliban for security.
RT International correspondent Murad Gazdiev and the RT Arabic team witnessed and videotaped Taliban insurgents firing their rifles in the air at Kabul airport on Wednesday in an attempt to frighten civilians desperate to flee. The Taliban has stated that allowing Afghans to exit the country is no longer an option.
