The World Bank has halted aid to Afghanistan, citing "deeply concerned" about the country's position and the impact of the Taliban's takeover of power on development prospects, particularly for women.
"We have paused disbursements in our operations in Afghanistan," a World Bank official told AFP. "We are closely monitoring and assessing the situation."
According to Reuters, the bank would continue to discuss closely with the international community and development partners regarding the issue.
The bank is looking into ways to stay involved and protect "hard-won development gains," according to the source.
According to the World Organization's website, the bank has more than two dozen development projects in the country and has committed $5.3 billion in grants since 2002.
