According to Russian media outlets citing senior Ukrainian officials, an airplane despatched from Ukraine to evacuate Ukrainian people stuck in Afghanistan was seized Tuesday and flown to Iran.
Armed hijackers took the jet in Kabul on Tuesday, according to TASS, and flew to Iran with an "unidentified group of passengers," according to Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Yenin.
“Our plane was hijacked by strangers last Sunday. The plane was effectively stolen from us on Tuesday; instead of transporting Ukrainians, it went into Iran with an undisclosed group of passengers on board.”
Following the fall of Kabul to Taliban rebels, several attempts by the Ukrainian government to evacuate its residents from the country were unsuccessful, according to Yenin.
“Our next three evacuation attempts also failed because our people were unable to gain access to the airport.”
Approximately 100 Ukrainians are thought to be stranded in Afghanistan.
There has been no information given about the passengers or the hijackers.
Ukraine will not attempt to recover the kidnapped plane, according to Yenin.
