R. Kelly married the late pop sensation Aaliyah when she was 15 because he thought she was pregnant, according to his former tour manager, who testified in federal court in Brooklyn on Friday.
Kelly married his teenage lover "to protect himself, to protect Aaliyah" after finding she was knocked up, according to Demetrius Smith, who worked with the "Bump n' Grind" singer in the 1990s.
Smith said Kelly admitted, "Aaliyah is in trouble, we need to go home," at a concert in Orlando, Fla. in 1994. “Man, Aaliyah thinks she's pregnant.”
Kelly quickly left the tour and flew home to Chicago, where a pastor married him and Aaliyah at a hotel, according to Smith.
“I guess jail,” Smith responded when asked by a prosecutor what Kelly needed protection from.
Smith admitted that he was originally put off by Kelly's flirtatious behavior around the "Back & Forth" singer when they first met in 1992 when Aaliyah was 13 years old.
“I just thought they were too friendly and playful...
He was wooing her,” Smith said, referring to Aaliyah's uncle and Kelly's manager, Barry Hankerson.
Kelly's lawyers submitted a 1994 marriage certificate on Friday, the third day of the 54-year-old singer's sex crimes and racketeering trial, revealing Aaliyah had allegedly lied about her age when she married Kelly, who was 27 at the time.
Smith reportedly acknowledged paying a public employee $500 to get a false ID for Aaliyah so the wedding could go place.
The testimony came only days before Aaliyah's untimely death 20 years ago, and her sophomore album "One in a Million" was published on streaming platforms this week.
Smith had mentioned earlier in the trial that Kelly composed a lot of Aaliyah's debut album, causing a prosecutor to inquire, "What was the name of the album?"
Smith responded, "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number."
