The US Air Force is investigating human remains found aboard the C-17 cargo plane and other potential deaths after panicked Afghans swarmed the aircraft at the international airport in Kabul on Monday.
The bones were recovered in the plane's wheel well after it landed in Qatar, according to Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek. The Air Force Special Investigations is also looking into recordings and social media posts showing passengers jumping out of the plane after it took off.
The jet arrived at Hamid Karzai International Airport with supplies for civilian evacuation. Hundreds of Afghan villagers surrounded the plane and clung to its fuselage before it could be unloaded. A video of the tumultuous situation has gone viral.
The crew decided to take off due to the "rapidly deteriorating security situation," according to Stefanek.
