It was a total disappointment for the US on Day One of the Olympics as the country failed to score a medal in the competition on the first day for the first time since 1972.
Out of the 11 medals given on Saturday, the US athletes had several upsets.
World Number one ranked archer Brady Ellison and Mackenzie Brown lost in the first round of the mixed team. Ellison said to USA Today that he himself expected gold from the event and was a bit shocked that he was out by the first round.
Mary Tucker, the American competing in the 10-meter air rifle competition, was expected to do well as she is ranked No. 2 in the world but ended up placing sixth.
There were also high hopes for Eli Dershwitz, who is ranked No. 2 in the world in saber but lost to Kim Jung-hwan of South Korea, who ended up winning the bronze.
