Six people have been arrested in the former French Colony of Madagascar following a suspected plot to kill the president.

The country's official said one among the six arrested was a French citizen.

Madagascar's attorney general said on Thursday police had arrested the six following what officials said was a months-long investigation.

Patrick Rajoelina, an adviser to President Andry Rajoelina, said two of those arrested had previously worked in the French military.

Rajoelina first took power in the deeply impoverished former French colony of 26 million people in a March 2009 coup, removing Marc Ravalomanana. He continued his rule through the acting presidents before assuming power to allegedly fraudulent elections in 2019.
