Japan: IOC spokesperson seeks to reassure public Tokyo games will be safe

IOC Spokesperson Mark Adams spoke on the measures being taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at the Tokyo Olympics, stating however that 'there can never be zero risks', during a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Adams said that the IOC has ensured that the 30,000 staff, athletes, and stakeholders were all tested on arrival.

Adams went on to stress how important it is that people follow the rules, explaining that there will be 'consequences' for those who don't.

Regarding the recent change of the Olympic motto, to include the word 'together, Adams said, "I think the idea of the motto is that you're unable to go faster, to go higher, to be stronger, without a team around you, both in sport and in life. I think the Olympic movement and its values is not just about individual excellence, which is very, very important, but it's about the team that surrounds you."

The 2020 summer Olympic Games will be held in Japan between July 23 and August 8 after being postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
