What was supposed to be a fun hike with friends turned tragic for Hong Kong socialite Sophia Cheung last Saturday (July 10).
According to HK01, Cheung and three of her friends left Tuen Man at 11 a.m. that day to hike at Ha Pak Lai park, a wetland area surrounded by mountains.
However, at 5 p.m., while snapping a snapshot near the Tsing Dai stream, the 32-year-old is said to have lost her footing and fallen into a five-meter deep pool, drowning.
She died while taking selfies on the edge of a waterfall, according to British media.
Her companions then phoned the police, who arrived in a helicopter to carry Cheung to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where she was pronounced dead.
Her Instagram account, which had over 16,000 followers, was noted for stunning images of her around Hong Kong's nature trails, with some showing her posing on the brink of cliff formations.
Many people just commented "RIP" in response to Cheung's newest Instagram post, expressing their sympathy over the awful situation.
In a similar tragic occurrence in January 2019, Taiwanese socialite Gigi Wu fell 20 to 30 meters into a ravine and suffered serious injuries while hiking. Wu had become well-known for snapping bikini photos on mountain peaks.
The 36-year-old told her pals via satellite phone that she couldn't move her lower body and couldn't give her coordinates after the accident, according to AFP. Authorities battled terrible weather before recovering her lifeless body a few days later.
