Although the United States has seemingly been using Taiwan as a weapon to attack China, it has made it clear that it does not support Taiwanese independence.

Taiwan(officially the Republic of China) is a breakaway province of mainland China (officially the People's Republic of China). Although governments in both regions agree on Taiwan to be a part of China, the debate is over the legitimate ruler to China.

Despite its initial support to the Republic of China, the US recognizes the People's Republic of China to be the legitimate ruler of China.

White House has made it clear that it has no plans to significantly alter its foreign policy with Taiwan.

During an online discussion hold by Asia Society Policy Institute, the White House coordinator for Indo-Pacific Strategy, Kurt Campbell, described Taiwan-U.S. relations as a "dangerous balance" between advocating for Taiwan's role on the global stage and avoiding a military confrontation with China.

During the talk, the vice president for International Security and Diplomacy, Daniel Russel, observed that amid tensions with China, the U.S. is edging closer to the line between unofficial and official relations with Taiwan and said he worries such moves could "hollow out America's one-China policy."

The U.S. supports a strong "unofficial relationship" with Taiwan but that "we do not support Taiwan independence." He stressed that the Biden administration is fully cognizant of the "sensitivities" involved in cross-strait relations.
