Following a procedure on his intestines on Sunday, the Vatican provided an update on Pope Francis' health, claiming that he is healing well and will spend a week in the hospital.
“Pope Francis is in good general condition, alert, and spontaneous breathing,” said Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, in a statement made on Monday.
The Vatican provided additional information on the pontiff's rehabilitation, stating that the procedure is going well and that no further issues are foreseen.
On Sunday, Pope Francis underwent a three-hour operation at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to correct diverticular stenosis, which was assisted by ten medical personnel. If left untreated, the illness causes a portion of the gut to narrow, preventing food from flowing through, which can be harmful. A portion of the Pope's left colon was also removed as part of the treatment.
The Pope stated just hours before the operation that he will visit Hungary and Slovakia in mid-September.
The 84-year-old has only had one other surgery since 2013, and that was to fix cataracts towards the end of 2019.
