The American restrictions made the Caribbean Island Cuba suffered a lot after they were denied visas for the preliminary round match against French Guyana for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

CONCACAF Gold Cup is the Football (Soccer) tournament between the nations of North and Central America. It is like the Copa America of the North.

French Guyana advanced to the second round of the Prelims after Cuba could not attend the tournament.

CONCACAF is using a new qualification format for the 2021 Gold Cup with a preliminary round featuring 12 countries competing for three places in the group stage.

The Cuban team was left stranded in Nicaragua due to the COVID-19 travel restriction and visa issues.

Cuba’s participation in this Gold Cup was highly anticipated because the roster includes 18 players who play professionally abroad, including forward Onel Hernandez, a Cuban-German dual national who plays for Norwich City in England. Last year, Hernandez became the first Cuban to play in the English Premier League.

The group stage matches of the tournament will begin on Thursday.
