Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open to focus on her mental health, and Will Smith has shown his support for her.

On Monday (31 May), the four-time Grand Slam champion announced her withdrawal from the competition, stating that she felt it was the "best thing for the competition, the other players, and my wellbeing."

Osaka had declared just days previously that she would be missing press conferences during the French Open due to her mental health issues, and she had been fined $15,000 (£10,600) for “choosing not to meet her contractual media obligations.”

Many powerful individuals from sports and beyond have come out in support of the 23-year-old, with actor Smith posting a snapshot of a handwritten note to her on his Instagram account on Thursday (3 June) night.

Smith wrote, "Hey Naomi. You are right. They are wrong! I'm here with you.”

His supporters agreed, with one user adding, "That's dope!" “Way to have Naomi back!” exclaimed another.

Denise Welch, the host of Loose Women, defended Osaka on Thursday (3 June), slamming Piers Morgan for labeling the tennis star "narcissistic" and a "spoiled brat."

“Piers also proves why so many individuals suffer in quiet because of the dread of being labeled ‘an arrogant narcissistic spoiled brat,'” Welch said, accusing Morgan of stigmatizing mental health issues. This guy is an f.....g embarrassment.”
