A doctor working in a COVID-19 ward in northeastern India was savagely attacked by a mob just hours after a patient died, prompting state officials' rapid condemnation and 24 arrests.
The mob accosted Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapati, who was performing his government-mandated rural service duty, early Wednesday, hours after the patient died, according to the Indian Express. He was beaten with brooms and pounded. A chunk of the assault was videotaped and has since gone viral.
The doctor's back was covered in deep welts and crisscrossing purple bruises, according to a photo that surfaced online.
The second wave of COVID-19 infections has ravaged the country, putting the country's healthcare system on the verge of collapse, albeit the infection rate appears to be reducing. According to Reuters, the country recorded 134,154 new infections on Thursday, down more than 65 percent from early May's peak. Since the pandemic began, 337,989 people have died.
According to the Express, the mob was made up of the patient's family members. The suspects have all been apprehended.
The Assam chapter of the Indian Medical Association advised doctors to refrain from treating patients outside of medical facilities in protest and demanded that the implicated be brought to justice quickly.
