On Thursday, the president of the Foreign Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) met with Myanmar's military leader Min Aung Hlaing in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw, the first meeting between the military commander and a top international representative since the February 1 takeover.
During the conference, Peter Maurer asked for the resumption of ICRC jail visits as well as expanded humanitarian access to combat zones.
Maurer also called for a stop to violence against civilians and for the military's security forces to respect international law and medical personnel during security operations.
According to those acquainted with the discussion, the military leader did not oppose Maurer's request.
