Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Tuesday that Australia would close its embassy in Kabul this week, highlighting deep concerns about the "increasingly uncertain security situation" in Kabul as foreign troops leave.

In light of the imminent international military withdrawal from Afghanistan, Morrison said the facility would close as a "interim measure" on May 28 — in three days.

s has begun officially withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan, marking the end of America's longest-ever war but also signaling an uncertain future for a country under the Taliban's control.

By September 11, the 20th anniversary of the al-Qaeda attacks that sparked the US-led invasion of the country, the majority of US troops are expected to leave.

“Australia expects this measure to be temporary, and we will restore a permanent presence in Kabul as soon as circumstances allow,” Morrison said.

A small contingent of Australian forces is also leaving Afghanistan, bringing an end to a mission that has cost the nation billions of dollars and stationed tens of thousands of military personnel far from home.

Morrison said that there was a "increasingly unpredictable security climate" without that small contingent and the larger US force as backup.

“The government has been told that security arrangements for our continuing diplomatic presence cannot be provided,” he said in a statement.
