No Real Madrid players made it into the Euro 2020 squad for Spain.
The team even did not include star defender Sergio Ramos who missed most of the second half of the football season due to series of injuries.
Spain's coach Luis Enrique said that Ramos' lack of play made it difficult for him to be included in the Euro 2020 squad.
“He will not be with us because he couldn’t compete during large parts of the season, he couldn’t even practice with his club,” Luis Enrique said.
“It was tough. It was a complicated decision but it had to be made to benefit the entire group. I felt bad because he has always been a player who gave everything he had, he has always been very professional.”
No Real Madrid Players got the call for the Spanish national side after the team finished off its football season without the tile for the first time in more than a decade.
Enrique clarified that he does not look the player's club into considerations. “If Carvajal and Ramos were fit they would be in the squad,” he said.
Other Madrid players who had been called up recently but were left off the list included Nacho Fernández and Marco Asensio.
“It pains me not to have been able to help my team more and not to play for Spain but, in this case, the best thing to do is rest, fully recover and come back next year as we’ve always done,” Sergio Ramos said on Twitter after being left off the national team. “It hurts not to represent your country, but I have to be honest and sincere.
“I wish all my teammates the very best of luck and I hope we have a great Euros,” he said. “I’ll be another fan cheering on from home.”
The Euro2020 which had been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic is starting on June 11.
Spain will play in Group E along with Sweden, Poland, and Slovakia. All of its games will be in the Spanish city of Seville, beginning on June 14 against Sweden.
