Sasha Johnson, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist, was shot in the head early Sunday morning and is being treated in intensive care, according to her political group.

She was in critical condition, according to the Taking the Initiatives Party.

The woman's identity has not been verified by the Metropolitan Police, but a woman, 27, was shot shortly before 3 a.m. at a party in Southwark, London.

The woman was taken to a south London hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to officers. They've asked for witnesses and confirmed that her family has been notified.

Ms. Johnson is a mother of two and a "strong voice," according to the group, who has always campaigned for black people and the injustices that plague the culture.

"Let us all pray for Sasha, pray for her recovery, and show our support for her family and loved ones," it said.

There was no proof that this was a deliberate shooting or that she had received any credible threats against her prior to the incident, according to police.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Command have been investigating the scene in Consort Road and the surrounding area and are following many leads.

According to police, the shooting occurred near a house where a party was being held, and many people may have been present.

"This was a shocking incident that resulted in a young woman suffering life-threatening injuries," said Det Chief Insp Jimi Tele.

"Our thoughts are with her family, who are receiving help during this extremely trying period."

Mr. Tele said that the detectives were making progress, but that they needed the public's assistance.

"It's critical that you contact us if you see something unusual in the Consort Road area early Sunday morning or if you have heard something since then that might support detectives."

Ms. Johnson, an Oxford Brookes University graduate, is a member of the Taking the Initiative Party's leadership committee and has been a leading figure in the UK's Black Lives Matter movement.
