The frontman of the funk-rock band Maneskin was called on to deny taking cocaine during the live broadcast of the show, after videos that went viral on social media appeared to show him snorting a line hours after Italy won the Eurovision contest Saturday night.
With their song "Zitti e Buoni," the often topless, high-kicking, lederhosen-wearing Italians beat out tough competition from France and Switzerland.
“Rock and roll never dies,” Damiano says. David yelled as he accepted the microphone-shaped glass Eurovision trophy after a tense finish that saw Maneskin take the lead with 524 points thanks to the popular vote.
However, after showering his bandmates with champagne at a press conference following the victory, David was questioned about his alleged rock and roll actions in the contestant's arena during the live show, where he was filmed in what many on social media interpreted as a drug-taking act.
“I'm not a drug user. Guys, please. He told reporters, "Don't say that, there's no cocaine."
Maneskin, a group made up of three men and one woman, focused on the music, saying that the whole evening of foot-stomping songs and flamboyant costumes had given them joy after more than a year of COVID-19.
“We believe the whole thing was a relief,” David says. “The whole thing was amazing, and this Eurovision is going to be a beacon.”
Victoria De Angelis, a bassist, said their victory "may be a sign of hope" to Italy, which was one of Europe's hardest hit by the virus.
She said of the Eurovision title, which Italy will host next year, "We're proud to be taking it back after 31 years."
Eden Alene, from Israel, came in 17th position out of 26 nations.
Alene ended her performance by thanking the audience in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.
Before leaving the stage, she screamed, "Toda raba, shukran, thank you very much!"
