Coronavirus type B.1.617.2, which was first detected in India, will be listed as a variant of concern, according to Public Health England, because evidence suggests it is more transmissible.

It stated that the variant's other characteristics were still being investigated.

"At this time, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that any of the variants recently discovered in India cause more serious disease or make current vaccines less successful," PHE said in a statement.
