A former white police officer has been charged with second-degree manslaughter for fatally shooting a 20-year-old black man.
Kim Potter, a 26-year police veteran, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter for the killing of the black motorist Daunte Wright. Potter could face a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.
She has been taken into custody at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, St. Paul. She will appear in court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
Wright was shot after he was pulled over for expired car registration.
Kim can be heard on the video saying, "Shit, I just shot him." after shooting the man.
Potter is currently being held on the $1,00,000 bail and is expected to make her first appearance on the court on Thursday afternoon.
Although Potter's shooting is said to be unintentional, Wright's family lawyer claims that was an intentional and unlawful use of force.
"While we appreciate that the district attorney is pursuing justice for Daunte, no conviction can give the Wright family their loved one back," Wrights' family lawyer Ben Crump said after the arrest.
"This was no accident. This was an intentional, deliberate, and unlawful use of force."
"We will keep fighting for justice for Daunte, for his family, and all marginalized people of color."
Protestors have been protesting and have occasionally faced off with the police, which has resulted in at least 60 protestors being arrested.
