AUGUSTA, Ga.—Tiger Woods was driving faster than 80 miles per hour at the time of the February car crash that left him severely injured, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office said Wednesday, which was unsafe for the conditions of the 45 mph roadway.

Authorities revealed the conclusions of their investigation at a news conference, but left aspects of what happened in the Feb. 23 crash unanswered.

Woods suffered major injuries to his legs that sent him into surgery in the crash that threatened the golf legend’s life. The wreck added yet another chapter to a career that has been defined by 15 major championship victories, severe injuries, scandal and a series of car-related incidents.

Woods, 45 years old, was driving a Genesis GV80 luxury SUV down a curvy hill near Los Angeles on the morning of Feb. 23 when his car hit the center median, the curb and then a tree before flipping multiple times and settling in brush, where emergency responders had to use tools to extricate him from the vehicle. The distance the car had traveled during the single-car crash, several hundred feet, had already indicated to law-enforcement officials that the car was traveling fast.
