At least one person has died after a fire broke out at a New York Nursing home. Fire officials in the rescue operation said that 20-30 residents, among 100-125 residing, were rescued.
The fire erupted at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults on Lafayette Street in Spring Valley, in Rockland County at around 1, on Tuesday Morning.
Rockland County fire and emergency director Chris Kea said, “We’ve got to start pulling it back and peeling it layer by layer, and hopefully he’ll be recovered.” He added that an excavator has been brought to remove the debris.
“There [were] plenty of Good Samaritans out there, probably eight of them, that literately ran into the building and [brought] them out in their wheelchairs, walkers, or literately picking them up and physically removing them out of the danger,” a witness told WNBC.
“Then watching their facility, their home going down in flames was something really traumatic,” she added.
Several parts of the building appeared to near collapse as seen on the video footage related to the incident.
Authorities have not provided the information related to the cause of the fire.
