Afghan Government has reversed its decision to ban school girls older than 12 from singing at public ceremonies after facing a wide backlash.

The ban was reinforced last week by Kabul’s education directorate in the form of a letter.

Dozens of Women and girls uploaded videos of them singing marked with the hashtag "#IamMySong.

The decision was criticized by female rights activists and common citizens.

Even the government officials came out to criticize the prohibition.

Waheed Omar, Senior Communication Adviser to the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani tweeted, “No individual or institution is allowed to set limits on the citizens of this country which contradicts to the spirit of this country’s constitution.”

The Afghan Education Ministry issued a statement saying, it takes pride in the participation of all students in social activities including singing groups.

The Ministry has also said it will probe deeper into the law.
