The anti-establishment left-wing party has registered a clear victory in the Kosovo elections held amid the Pandemic and the economic backlash.

The socialist party namely Vetëvendosje (self-determination) has won more than 48 percent of the public support, with 98 percent of the votes been counted.

The governing conservative party, the Democratic League of Kosovo is far behind with 13 percent. The center-right Democratic Party of Kosovo is second to the Self Determination Party with 17 percent of the votes.

The turnouts on the elections held on Sunday was just 47%, which is still 2.5% higher than the one in the 2019 elections. The temperature was as low as -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) on the election day.

The leader of the Vetëvendosje Party Albin Kurti is expected to be the next prime minister of the country. The country faces economic backlash, unemployment, organized crime, and corruption alongside the Pandemic. The challenge of the new government will be to overcome these problems.

Kurti has said that the priority will be justice and jobs. “We won this referendum for justice and jobs, against state capture and corruption,” he said. “Our priority is justice and jobs.”

However, Kurti's party may not gain a full majority to create a cabinet on its own. Kurti has said it clearly that his party will not collaborate with the right-wing losing opponents.
