On Friday, a 48-year-old Japanese woman was arrested for hiding her mother's corpse for a decade in a freezer in her apartment. The corpse was hidden by Yumi Yoshino as she feared eviction if the death was discovered. Yoshino said she hid the body because she "didn't want to move out."
A cleaner found the body in a freezer inside a closet after Yoshino was forced to leave the apartment in mid-January. She was running out on rent payments. The mother of Yoshino, who was identified in the apartment's lease papers, is said to have died at the age of 60. The apartment is in a municipal housing complex in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward. The time and cause of the death of the woman could not be determined by an autopsy. No obvious wounds on the woman's body were identified, although the body was bent to match the freezer, police told AFP.
Yoshino was arrested at a hotel near Tokyo in the city of Chiba, where she was staying after the eviction.
