Iran has called on Interpol to arrest US President Donald Trump and 47 other U.S. officials named as having played a role in last year's assassination of top general Qassem Soleimani, reports Mehr News.

"The request to issue a 'Red Notice' was handed over to Interpol to 48 people involved in the murder of Martyr Soleimani, including the President of the United States, as well as Pentagon and regional commanders and officials," Judiciary Spokesman Gholam Hossein Esmaeili said in a weekly press release on Tuesday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is following and punishing those who ordered and executed this crime very seriously," Esmaili told reporters.

On January 3, 2020, Soleimani, Iran's top general who led the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' international operations arm, was assassinated in a US drone strike ordered by Trump in Baghdad.

There have been growing tensions between Iran and the US around the first anniversary of the assassination of Soleimani.
