India has authorized two "made in India" vaccines, for emergency use. Oxford-AstraZeneca's vaccine and a vaccine by local pharmaceutical called Bharat Biotec have been approved by the drug regulation authority.

Country's Drug Controller General, Dr Venugopal G Somani said at a press briefing on Sunday that  both the vaccines would be administered in two doses.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi said that this is a very proud moment for Indians that both the vaccines are "made in India" as it shows a "self-reliant India".

The vaccination in the second most populated country ies expected to reach more than 1.3 billion people. In the inital immunization program targets 300 million potential high risks groups by August 2021. The high priority group includes healthcare workers, front-line staff including police and those considered vulnerable due to their age or other diseases.

The Serum Insitute of India has been contracted by AstraZeneca to make billions of doses of vaccines for the developing countries including India.

The approved vaccines are claimed to be 100% safe by Indian officials. Dr Venugopal G Somani said, "The vaccines wouldn't have been approved if there were slightest of concerns."

Application by american company Pfizer Inc, is still under review.

India is the most affected country by the pandemic after United States. More than 10.3 Million cases have been confirmed in the South Asian nation where more than 150 thousand people have lost the life due to the virus.
