Yoshihide Suga elected to become next Prime Minister of Japan

TOKYO: Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has named Yoshihide Suga as its new prime minister, replacing incumbent Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Suga polled 377 votes out of a total of 534, including ruling party MPs and regional representatives. According to media, if there are no other miracles, Suga will formally become the Prime Minister in the Parliament on Wednesday.

Mr. Suga serves as the government’s top spokesperson as chief Cabinet secretary, played a prominent role in the current administration.

Suga, 71, has said he will continue Abe's predecessor's policy during his tenure. He also thanked the party for choosing him. "In this national crisis of the coronavirus, we cannot afford a political vacuum," Suga said.

Suga further said that Abe's policy should be implemented to get rid of the crisis and provide relief to the Japanese people. Earlier, Suga had also claimed for the post of Prime Minister.

This time Suga was competing with former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba and LDP policy chief Fumio Kishida.

Abe had the full support of Suga during his eight-year tenure.

Similarly, Abe expressed his commitment to fully support Suga this time. He also said that Suga has the ability to work hard for the nation and the people.
