Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai has been arrested on suspicion of collusion with foreign forces under China’s new national law for the city.

Jimmy Lai on Monday became the highest-profile arrest so far since China imposed the security legislation in June.

Hong Kong police confirmed the arrest of seven people aged between 39 and 72 on suspicion of violating the law but did not reveal the names who was taken in the custody.

The national security law came into effect on June 30.

The new security law punishes anything China considers subversive and terrorist acts, terrorism as well as collusion with foreign forces carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

This isn’t Lai’s first clash with Hong Kong authorities, 71-year old, who also hold UK citizenship, was faced charges earlier this year in connection with a protest march in August 2019. In February, Lia was charged with illegal assembly and intimidation.

Lia, who owns popular tabloid Apple Daily is estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.
