Former Malaysian Prime Minister has been sentenced to serve up to 12 years in prison on Tuesday after finding him guilty of corruption on all seven counts in the first of several multi-billion-dollar financial scandals at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The court also fined him 210 million ringgit (49.40 million U.S dollars) for abuse of power.
The case on Tuesday against makes Najib the first Malaysian leader to be sentenced for corruption and seen as a test of Malaysia’s anti-corruption efforts.
High court judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali ordered that the jail terms run concurrently.
Najib has vowed to appeal, faces 42 charges overall in 5 separate cases.
“I am surely not satisfied with the result,” Najib told reporters.
