North Korea puts lockdown over first suspected coronavirus case

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held an emergency meeting with top officials, imposing total lockdown in the city of Kaesong near the border with South Korea after a person was found with suspected Covid-19 symptoms.

If the person is officially declared a virus patient, he or she would be the North’s  Korea first confirmed coronavirus case

In North Korea, it is compulsory for people to wear masks in public places.

The lockdown was declared Friday afternoon.

State news agency The Korean Central News Agency said a person who had fled to South Korea three years ago before illegally returned on 19 July crossing the demarcation line into North Korea last week had Covid-19 symptoms.

At Saturday’s emergency  Politburo meeting, Mr. Kim declared a “state of maximum emergency system and issue a top-class alert” to contain the virus.

KCNA further added that Mr. Kim also discussed the “loose guard performance” and launched an investigation into how the person had managed to cross the border.

At the same time, South Korea Government has not reported any illegal crossing on the North Korean Announcement.
