A COVID-19 model produced by the University of Washington and also used by the White House has predicted more than 200,000 people in the US could die of COVID-19 by October 1.
According to the latest model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, a research institute once utilized by the White House for coronavirus projections, another 85,000 or so deaths are now projected by October 1.
According to IHME Director Christopher Murray, "We're now able to look ahead and see where states need to begin planning for the second wave of COVID-19."
"We hope to see our model proven wrong by the swift actions governments and individuals take to reduce transmission," he added.
As of Friday, more than 120,691 people in the U.S. have died of the coronavirus, and the death toll is still growing by hundreds per day.
