Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease doctor and a key member of the White House coronavirus task force, said Tuesday that cities and states could “turn back the clock” and see more COVID-19 deaths and economic damage alike if they lift coronavirus stay-at-home orders too fast -- a sharp contrast as President Donald Trump pushes to right a free-falling economy.
He says schools won't be able to count on a vaccine or treatment when considering whether to open in the fall.
Fauci warned that if states reopen prematurely and don't have the capability to handle new cases, "the consequences could be really serious" and more outbreaks can occur.
"There's no doubt that even under the best of circumstances when you pull back on mitigation, you will see some cases appear," he said.
Because of more than 30 million people unemployed in the U.S., Trump has been pressuring states to reopen.
