Thursday, media reports indicated that former US Vice President Mike Pence had been subpoenaed by the special counsel conducting investigations into former President Donald Trump.
According to sources quoted by US media, special counsel Jack Smith was investigating records and testimony related to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Smith is in charge of the Justice Department's investigation into the discovery of secret materials at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida and a separate probe into the January 6 attack.
A little over two years ago, Trump supporters aggressively attacked the Capitol, overrunning barricades and fighting police before storming the building many Americans consider a bulwark of democracy.
The Capitol was attacked for the first time since the War of 1812 on that day.
Trump invited them to the nation's capital to discuss his unverified claims of massive voting fraud, which he alleges contributed to his loss to Joe Biden in the election.
Trump lost the 2020 presidential election by a margin of more than 7 million votes, and more than fifty court decisions have rebuffed his charges. They were also rejected by his attorney general, William Barr, who resigned from the Justice Department in the administration's last days as Trump attempted to preserve power.
Five persons perished due to the violence on January 6, 2021, while four law enforcement personnel committed suicide in the aftermath.
