Wednesday, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand stated that Canada would give the Ukraine 10 replacement barrels for M777 howitzer artillery cannons.
This military aid, valued at approximately 9 million Canadian dollars (7.2 million U.S. dollars), complements Canada's previous donation of M777 howitzers, over 20,000 rounds of compatible artillery ammunition, and training of Ukrainian forces in the use of this equipment, according to a news release from the minister of defense.
Anand remarked on her participation in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group conference led by the United States, following bilateral discussions with Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
According to the news release, this military assistance is an expansion of the army aid Canada has pledged to Ukraine since February 2022, including the contribution of M777s from Canadian Armed Forces stocks and the commitment to finance over 20,000 rounds of U.S.-sourced 155 mm ammunition.
The procurement of ten immediately available replacement barrels will ensure that the M777 howitzers maintain their range and accuracy, as worn barrels must be replaced regularly, according to a press statement.
Since February 2022, Canada has provided Ukraine with military assistance totaling 274 million Canadian dollars (219 million U.S. dollars).
