Japanese media reported on Saturday that former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's accused assassin would undergo a psychiatric examination later this year.
Police have identified Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old unemployed man, as the suspect who approached Abe at a campaign address on a street corner on July 8 and opened fire with a homemade gun.
According to the Nikkei and other media, a court in Nara, in western Japan, where the suspect lived and where the shooting occurred, granted prosecutors' request that Yamagami is remanded for psychiatric evaluation.
Outside business hours, it was impossible to contact Nara prosecutors for comment.
According to the Nikkei, the review will go until November 29 and determine whether or not Yamagami will be indicted for the shooting.
