Tuesday's U.S. airstrike in northwest Syria resulted in the death of a senior ISIS leader, the military claimed.
The strike outside of Jindayris killed Maher al-Agal, the leader of ISIS in Syria and one of the group's top five leaders, according to a statement released by U.S. Central Command.
Al-Agal was in charge of expanding ISIS networks outside Iraq and Syria.
In addition, a top ISIS official "closely associated" with al-Agal was severely injured during the hit, according to an unidentified statement. According to an initial analysis of the strike, there were no civilian casualties.
A CENTCOM spokeswoman, Col. Joe Buccino, stated that the strike "reaffirms CENTCOM's unwavering commitment to the region and the permanent defeat of ISIS."
"The elimination of these ISIS leaders will impede the terrorist group's ability to continue plotting and executing global attacks," Buccino stated.
This is the most recent strike the United States has conducted in northwest Syria against terrorist group leaders.
Abu Hamzah al Yemeni, a top leader of the al Qaeda-affiliated Hurras al-Din, was killed by an airstrike in Idlib Province in late June.
Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, a prominent ISIS leader, committed suicide during a U.S. airstrike that targeted him.
