Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian man near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank early Monday; the Palestinian health ministry said, the latest death in a wave of violence that erupted throughout the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The Israeli military said it opened fire late Sunday on a Palestinian attempting to throw a firebomb at an Israeli car traveling along a West Bank route.
The killing brought the Palestinian death toll to four in the last 24 hours, including an unarmed woman shot and killed at a military checkpoint near Bethlehem.
This year, Ramadan coincides with significant Jewish and Christian holidays. Last Ramadan, protests, and riots in Jerusalem culminated in an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza militants.
Israel has increased its military activities in the West Bank following the killing of 14 Israelis by Palestinian assailants in four separate incidents inside Israel in recent weeks.
Simultaneously, it has taken a series of moves to calm the situation, including issuing work permits to thousands of Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said Monday that it detained 13 Palestinians suspected of being militants involved in the West Bank. They added that Palestinians threw rocks at troops and set fire to tires during the arrest operations.
Palestinian health officials identified the man murdered late Sunday in the latest shooting as Muhammad Ali Ahmed Ghoneim, 21.
According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Mohammed Zakarna, 17, died on Monday after being injured by Israeli fire a day earlier in the West Bank city of Jenin.
Israeli forces monitored Jenin, a Palestinian militant bastion, on Sunday as soldiers investigated the home of an attacker who killed three Israelis last week in a mass shooting.
According to the army, soldiers encountered a shooter on a motorcycle and shot him.
It was unclear at the time whether Zakarna was shot.
Israeli troops shot and murdered two Palestinian women earlier Sunday. According to the Israeli army, one stabbed and lightly injured a police officer in Hebron. The other was an unarmed lady who allegedly disobeyed warning shots and commands to stop as she approached a checkpoint near Bethlehem.
Palestinian terrorists frequently attack checkpoints around the West Bank. However, Palestinians and human rights organizations allege that Israel's military often employs disproportionate force and has harmed or killed persons who were not participating in the conflict.
The diplomatic delegation of the European Union to the Palestinian territories charged Israel with using excessive force in fatally shooting the defenseless woman.
"This incident must be investigated immediately and the perpetrators apprehended," declared on Twitter.
Separately, the military said that two Israeli residents arrived with gunshot wounds at a West Bank checkpoint near Nablus on Monday.
According to the Israeli public channel Kan, the two attempted to visit Joseph's Tomb a day earlier and were attacked by unidentified assailants.
A group of Palestinians set fire to the tomb the day before, being dispersed by Palestinian security troops.
The shrine, which is located on the outskirts of Nablus in the northern West Bank, is a frequent flashpoint.
According to some Jews, this is the tomb of biblical Joseph, whereas Muslims think it is the grave of a sheik.
In collaboration with Palestinian security forces, the army guides Jewish worshipers to the site multiple times a year.
