The mayor claimed that an automobile drove into carnival revelers early Sunday in a tiny town in southern Belgium. Several people were killed, and over two dozen were injured.
According to media accounts, at least four people were murdered when a car plowed into a crowd gathered for celebrations in Strépy-Bracquegnies, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Brussels, on Sunday morning.
"A automobile approached from behind at a fast rate of speed. And we have many dozen injured, as well as multiple fatalities," Mayor Jacques Gobert told RTBF radio.
According to media sources, the incident may have been triggered by a police pursuit of a car.
