On Thursday, black smoke rose over north-eastern Kyiv following reports of a strike on a military base in Brovary.

"Two cruise missiles have just hit our Brovary military base. This information comes from the General Staff of [Ukraine]. The number of victims and devastation is being defined "Anton Herashchenko, an official counselor at Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs, posted on Facebook.

Footage also shows the streets of Kyiv following Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of military strikes against Ukraine on Thursday morning.

Following the declaration, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared martial law throughout the nation and severed diplomatic ties with Russia.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Armed Forces are not carrying out missile and artillery strikes against Ukrainian cities.

High-precision weapons are used to disable military infrastructure: military airfields, aviation, and air defense facilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Civilians are not threatened. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that cities were under bombardment.

"This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now."
