Andrej Babis, the Czech Republic's outgoing prime minister, announced Thursday that he had formally submitted his resignation to the president following his defeat in last month's elections.
Milos Zeman, the Czech president, had already appointed Petr Fiala, the leader of the center-right Together alliance, to create a new government earlier this week.
"Our government resigned this morning," Babis wrote on Twitter.
The resignation will become effective if Zeman accepts it, as he has been hospitalized with liver ailments since October 10 — the day following the vote.
Babis, a populist billionaire, will serve as interim Prime Minister until a new administration is sworn in.
Additionally, the Together alliance reached a coalition agreement with a moderate two-party partnership this week.
This broader coalition controls 108 of the 200 seats in the freshly elected lower house of parliament.
The Czech Republic, an EU and NATO member with a population of 10.7 million, is coping with an outbreak of Covid-19 and a dramatic increase in energy prices.
