Over the previous week, the UK saw the largest number of new cases of COVID-19 since July, according to official records, a day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson downplayed the possibility of a return to lockdown.

Over the past seven days, 333,465 people in the United Kingdom tested positive for COVID-19, a 15% increase over the previous week and the highest amount since the week of July 21, when England celebrated the lifting of prohibitions on "freedom day."

On Saturday, 44,985 new cases were reported, down from 49,298 the day before. Only England's daily death numbers were available, and they revealed 135 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

The number of deaths has increased by 12% in the last week, bringing the total number of deaths since the outbreak to 139,461, second only to Russia in Europe.
