According to Xinhua, New York State will have its first female governor as of Tuesday, when incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo's resignation takes effect.
Cuomo's successor as Governor of New York would be Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who would serve until the conclusion of Cuomo's tenure in 2022.
According to media sources, Hochul will be sworn in just after midnight in a brief and private ceremony presided over by Janet DiFiore, New York State's chief judge.
According to the New York Times, Hochul intends to appoint a New York City lawmaker as the new lieutenant governor.
On Monday, Hochul named two females to the positions of secretary and counsel to the governor.
“As governor, I will put together a strong team to turn the pandemic around and serve the best interests of New York, whether that means defeating COVID, increasing vaccination rates, or strengthening our economy,” Hochul stated.
According to a statement on the official website of New York State, Hochul's team is taking applications for her administration and is searching for skilled and committed employees.
Hochul was born in Buffalo, New York, and served in the US House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013. He has been the lieutenant governor of New York since January 1, 2015.
“Kathy Hochul will be elected governor, and I am confident that she will rise to the occasion. In his goodbye speech on Monday, Cuomo stated, "We all wish her success."
In his speech, Cuomo defended himself, stating that New York Attorney General Letitia James' inquiry report acted as a political firecracker and that he is confident that the truth will be revealed in due time.
Cuomo resigned two weeks ago after independent investigators commissioned by James found that Cuomo sexually assaulted multiple women between 2013 and 2020.
