Two Myanmar Citizens have been arrested on the act of conspiring to assault or even assassinate the Myanmar envoy to the United Nations, in New York.
The arrested individuals, 28-year-old Phyo Hein Htut, and 20-year-old Ye Hein Zaw plotted to seriously injure or kill Kyaw Moe Tun in an attack that was to take place in Westchester County.
The conspirators can potentially face a jail term of up to five years.
In a release on Friday, US state attorney Audrey Strauss said, "As alleged, Phyo Hein Htut and Ye Hein Zaw plotted to seriously injure or kill Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations in a planned attack on a foreign official that was to take place on American soil."
According to an indictment submitted to the federal court in New York, a Thai arms dealer who sold weapons to the Myanmar army, hired the two suspects to kill or intimidate the UN Ambassador to leave his post.
Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations Kyaw Moe Tun has denounced the junta government which has taken over power in Myanmar following a military coup on February 1.
Kyaw Moe Tun denounced his allegiance to the Myanmar junta government and asked for international intervention during the UN Assembly.
At least 946 people have been killed in the country as the civil disobedience movement has been taking place in the Southeast Asian country defying the coup. Many of the deads include children and teenagers.
5495 people are in police custody and about 1400 arrest warning has been issued against anti-junta activists in Myanmar.
