Lisa Banes, a well-known American actress, died at the age of 65 after suffering severe injuries in a hit-and-run accident.

The actress, who is best known for her roles in the films Gone Girl and Cocktail, was taken to the hospital on June 4 after being hit by a motorized scooter.

Banes died on Monday, according to her friends, who confirmed her death to The New York Post.

Her agent told Entertainment Tonight in a moving statement: "We are devastated by Lisa's untimely and senseless death.

"She was a woman of great enthusiasm, generosity, and dedication to her work, whether on stage or in front of the camera, as well as to her wife, family, and friends.

"She was a blessing to have in our life."

No arrests have been made as a result of the scooter incident, according to Metro.co.uk.

The actress was apparently on her way to New York City to visit her wife Kathryn Kranhol when the accident occurred, with Banes crossing the road only to be struck by the scooter.

The scooter's driver fled the scene while a police chase was underway.

Banes was reported to be in serious condition in the Mount Sinai Morningside hospital following the event, having sustained a major head injury.

The New York Authorities Department issued the following statement: "On Friday, June 4, 2021, at about 1833 hours, police responded to a 911 call reporting a pedestrian struck by a car near the junction of West 64 Street and Amsterdam Avenue, within the 20 Precinct.

"Officers arrived to find a 65-year-old female pedestrian with severe head damage lying on the roadside. EMS arrived at the scene and took the aided female to Mount Sinai Saint Luke's Hospital, where she is now in critical condition.

Banes, who is originally from Ohio, relocated to New York to study acting at the prestigious Juilliard School and went on to have a successful Broadway career.

With 1984's The Hotel New Hampshire, she got her big break in the movies, and she went on to play opposite Tom Cruise in the love drama Cocktail.

She most recently appeared in David Fincher's adaptation of the novel Gone Girl as Marybeth Elliott, the mother of Rosamund Pike's Amy Elliott.

Kathryn Kranhol, Banes's four-year-old wife, survives her.
