Hundreds of mourners attended a public burial service on Saturday to pay their respects to a Canadian Muslim family who were run over and killed by a man in a pick-up truck last Sunday in a hate-motivated crime, according to police.

The hour-long service began with prayers and condolences from religious and community leaders as four coffins covered in Canadian flags rolled into the compound of the Islamic Centre of Southwest Ontario.

The four victims, who spanned three generations, were killed while out on an evening walk near their house in London, Ontario, when Nathaniel Veltman, 20, ran into them. A ninth family member, a 9-year-old kid, is in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

The incident was premeditated, according to police, and the family was singled out because of their Islamic faith.
After that, the funeral procession moved on to a private burial.

"And the very fact their coffins are draped in the beautiful Canadian flag is an apt testimony of the fact that the entire Canadian nation stands with them," Raza Bashir Tarar High Commissioner for Pakistan to Canada told the gathering.
