It has been a decade of long-lasting trauma in the Middle Eastern nation of Syria.
The United Nations envoy for Syria Geir Pederson addressed the UN Security Council on a grim 10th anniversary of the Syrian conflict.
He described the Syrian conflict as one of the darkest chapters in history and referred to the Syrian people as the worst victims of the century.
The UN Special Envoy said that Syria has seen countless violations of international laws and people have been facing the unspeakable horror of chemical weapons.
Syrian population has been deliberately starved by the perpetrators of the conflict and the people have been denied humanitarian assistance.
Women face sex-related violence by all the parties of the conflict and the forced marriage has risen in the period.
The UN Special Envoy to Syria described Syria as being trapped in the geopolitical situation of the globe.
“All Syrians have seen that the international community has been divided, trapped in geopolitical competition, caught in their own competing narratives, and often focussed on supporting one side [or other] in the conflict,” he said.
The constant attempts of solving the problems through diplomacy have been ineffective due to the "you first policy", according to Pederson.
