A group of about 1,000 demonstrators had gathered at a popular shopping mall in Yangon’s Tamwe neighborhood overnight to protest a military-appointed official. Discrediting the Feb 1 coup, protestors were holding banners and shouting slogans despite the presense of security with a water cannon truck in the area.
At least one demonstrator was arrested and a unit of about 50 riot police acted against the protesters. The political crisis in the country took a new turn this Thursday when supporters of the military junta in Yangon attacked demonstrators protesting the Feb 1 coup overthrow of the civilian government.
Police and security forces fired warning shots as they moved to break up the rioting group. A Japanese journalist was detained at the protest as well.
