A second drug leader of one of the largest drug syndicates has been arrested in Thailand. He is a member of the largest drug syndicates, Sam Gor group, which police say dominates the $70 billion annual Asia Pacific drug trade.
Hong Kong citizen Lee Chung Chak was arrested in Bangkok, preceded the arrest of the Tse Chi Lop, a China-born Canadian national in the Netherlands last month. Tse Chi Lop is believed to be the leader of the syndicate according to the authorities.
Lee, 65 is a former prison mate of Tse Chi Lop and also a partner in crime. According to Reuters, a 2018 Australian Federal Police (AFP) document outlining the top 19 targets in the syndicate described Lee as a "senior project manager responsible for big ventures of border controlled drugs."
Two major players of the drug syndicates to be arrested in different countries adds to the challenge for the authorities investigating the syndicate.
It is extremely rare for druglords to be arrested and be successfully prosecuted in the Asia Pacific regions.
Australian authorities have requested Lee's extradition to Australia. The extradition is currently being processed by the court.
